Sometimes referred to as flags, these are rows of data that you need to make use of regularly that will help you to simplify your model. Typically we find that these items can be things like macro economics (inflations, exchange rates) and timings (dates, periods, year ends etc). What you actually need depends on the financial model you are building but the process is similar no matter what you do.

We usually have 2 such areas being a separate sheet/ area which contains all our common use data and then at the top of every sheet we have some ‘headers’ which are the more common data requirements. Normally date related we also put in other key items we want to see (and refer formulas to).

Headers

On every sheet in your financial model you should have an area which contains common headers.
