The Horizontal Axis has a very important customisation option with regards handling dates and other useful options
Dates versus Text (or dates you would rather see as text)

The first option available in the Format Horizontal Axis asks what it must do if it sees dates? This often causes confusion so it is important you understand it otherwise you may see dates on the chart that don’t exist in the data.
Use Axis to show actuals vs budget?
You can specify where the vertical axis crosses the horizontal axis. 
Tick marks, labels and number format
As with the vertical axis, you can customise your chart to the point where the tick marks can be inside or outside and the series can be between the tick mark or on the tick mark.
