How do I know if I have PowerPivot?

If you already know you have PowerPivot you can skip this lesson. If you are just exploring then read on.

This is a surprisingly difficult question to answer. Due to the way it has been rolled out you may or may not already have it, and even if you download it (Excel 2010) you may or may not be able to install it. There are 2 different versions so depending on your version of Excel you will need to check whether you have PowerPivot in different ways. (See this petition to make it available to all Excel users)

Has PowerPivot already been switched on for you?

The easiest check is just to look at your Excel Ribbon. If you can see a tab that says PowerPivot you have it and it is switched on.

The PowerPivot Ribbon

If not you may still have it but need to switch it on.

Excel 2013 PowerPivot

If PowerPivot is not showing in the ribbons, you may still have is available, just not switch on. The easiest way to know is just to try and switch PowerPivot on. To do this in Excel 2013, do the following:

  • Open your Excel 2013
  • Click on File
  • Click on Options

  • Click on the Add Ins button
  • At the bottom click on the Excel Add-Ins dropdown and change it to COM Add-Ins
  • Click on the GO button

  • If you have it you will see ‘Microsoft Office PowerPivot for Excel 2013’ or something similar.
  • Switch it on and you are good to go

If you didn’t see it your probably don’t have the correct version. You need to speak to your IT department or Microsoft.

Excel 2010 PowerPivot

For Excel 2010 you can follow the exact same steps as for Excel 2013 above.

If you don’t find it however, for Excel 2010 you can download a free Add In to install¬†PowerPivot (easier then gettting a new 2013 version). You can get it from the Microsoft site. Click on the Download button.

You need to choose one of the versions (32 bit vs 64 bit) but a quick way is to download both and then run them. If it is the incorrect version it will tell you. Delete it and try the other one. Follow the same process as shown for Excel 2013 to activate it.
