Finding text becomes more difficult when you know what it starts with and ends with but you don’t know what is in the middle. This is where wildcard characters come into play and these can be used in Find and Replace.

In the spreadsheet below we need to delete the numbers in the highlighted column. The problem is that they are not consistent. So we can’t say find all the (38223) and replace with nothing, as that won’t work on the cells that have (38237). We need to somehow tell Excel that it must find an open bracket ‘(‘ and then some unknown characters and then a closed bracket ‘)’.
